Given the combination of the economic malaise and the sensationalism that surrounds topics such as cloud computing and server virtualization, it is possible to surmise that nothing of significance is happening in the networking space. Nothing could be further from the truth. 

Cisco's Chambers gets $2 million payout despite bad year
Cisco Systems gave Chairman and CEO John Chambers a "discretionary incentive payment" of more than US$2 million for the company's 2009 fiscal year, despite the fact that net income fell nearly 24 percent from the previous year on sales that were down almost 9 percent.

I always find it amusing when desperate Wall Street investment bankers float takeover rumors in the hope of putting lackluster performing companies into play while also simultaneously inflating the laggard company's stock price. My case in point? Alcatel-Lucent!

F5 clobbers Cisco in application delivery controller market share
Infonetics Research Enterprise Voice & Data Analyst Matthias Machowinski released this week his 2Q09 Ethernet Switches and Application Delivery Controllers report. The report revealed that F5's application delivery controller revenue share increased while Cisco's decreased in 2Q09, giving F5 the clear lead two quarters in a row.

Cisco-built VMworld labs suffer glitches
Just a day after Cisco presented a glowing testimonial of its Unified Computing System and associated technologies at customer Tutor Perini, the platform suffered a high profile hiccup at this week's VMworld conference.
