	Convergence - The "Final Frontier" So here we are. After more than 13 years and considerably more than 1,300 semi-weekly newsletters, it's time to move on to alternate assignments and alternate communications modes. And if pressed to single out a trend that, more than anything else, has been the hallmark of change over the duration of this newsletter, we would have to say it's "convergence." Softbank announces 110 Mbps network, may handle iPhones Softbank, Japan's third-largest mobile carrier and exclusive purveyor of the Apple iPhone in the country, said Thursday it would launch in November a new data network allowing downloads of up to 110 Mbps (megabits per second), faster than many wired connections provide today. Network routers are among the main beneficiaries of this trend, especially those that can support a variety of third-party open source firmware projects. One variant, DD-WRT has become a common out-of-the-box option for many routers, but also exists in stand-alone implementations that can be placed on routers that support it. Hundreds of routers can run DD-WRT firmware, including nearly 100 Linksys models alone.
