- SPIT Polish: Service Provider IT Steps Up
By Rob Preston
rpreston@techweb.com

One of InformationWeek's editorial partners, LightReading.com, is diving deep into how IT organizations at telecom service providers are transforming their industry's networks and services. SPIT, or Service Provider IT, is Light Reading's new term describing the evolving set of non-traditional telecom (and data networking) technologies that allow for a greater degree of flexibility in the creation, management, delivery, and monetization of new-generation communications services.

Along those lines, Light Reading has published the SPIT Manifesto.

This document outlines how these (mostly) back office systems have moved to the front lines as service providers aim to cut costs, develop new services, and seek new revenue sources.

Ravinder Jain, CIO at Aircel, India's fifth-largest mobile operator, tells Light Reading how the service provider CIO job is changing from just problem-solving and provisioning IT business systems to helping build the business itself--using Aircel's IT assets to bring value to the operator's top customers. That interview confirms what InformationWeek has been reporting for years: that IT leaders are critical to the strategic direction of telecom operators -- and all businesses being remade by the Internet's growth.
