Also, sales of smartphones running the Window Mobile operating system declined 20% in the third quarter at the same time that total smartphone sales surged 13%, according to an analysis of newly released sales data from Gartner Inc. Not wanting to be left behind in the smartphone wars, Dell announced Friday that it was bringing its first-ever smartphone to China Mobile.

Apple patent filing reignites tablet device rumors
A recent Apple patent filing reveals an invention for hand-writing recognition for pen-based computers. The news sparked a new wave of speculation about Apple's possible mobile tablet plans. Meanwhile, Microsoft may be getting new respect as details leak about Courier, a small, folding tablet that blends pen and gestures.

YouTube Goes High Definition with 1080p Videos
YouTube says it will start supporting 1080p high-definition video in full resolution starting next week. The Google-owned video-sharing site will add support for viewing videos in 720p or 1080p resolutions, depending on the resolution of the original source.

Google, Amazon, Microsoft beef up cloud services
Three of the cloud industry's biggest players made some interesting competitive moves this month, with Microsoft and Google slashing prices for certain cloud-based applications, and Amazon announcing an expansion into Asia.

Cisco raised a big stink over losing a longtime customer's $3.5M network upgrade deal to HP

Interestingly enough, The Arizona Republic is reporting this week that Cisco raised a big stink over losing its longtime Arizona customer - Gilbert Public School's $3.5 million network upgrade to HP.

NASA finds "lots of water" from moon crash tests
The NASA spacecraft that plowed into the moon last month have discovered what the space agency calls "significant amounts of water" on the lunar surface.
