Spotlight Story NetApp acquires Data Domain for $1.5 billion NetApp blew its top last week with the acquisition of data deduplication vendor Data Domain for $1.5 billion. Data Domain, which makes in-line processing data deduplication appliances, claims AT&T and the U.S. Defense Department as its customers. The company's sales last year amounted to $274 million, with net income of $21.6 million. Amazon S3 lets customers ship big data Amazon's S3 cloud storage service has a new option, called AWS Import/Export, for quickly uploading large amounts of information to its data centers. It uses a well-developed, multimodal content delivery network that can transmit terabytes of data faster than a T-3 leased line. Multi-dimensional discs herald massive data storage Researchers at a Melbourne University have come up with a "five dimensional" disc capable of storing 2000 times more data than a conventional DVD.
