With some stand-alone VoIP services like Vonage stagnant and others like Verizon's VoiceWing and AT&T's CallVantage dead or dying, we decided to check in on a company called magicJack, an unusual VoIP provider. We were surprised with what we found out when we talked with Dan Borislow, the inventor of the technology and co-foundeder of the company. The biggest surprise? MagicJack has over 3 million customers and is adding 250,000 new customers a month, according to Borislow. Read full story

A cheap VoIP alternative: magicJack Gibbs looks at magicJack, a good, cheap VoIP service, but support is lacking.

AT&T expands its contact center portfolio AT&T last week announced that it has expanded its contact center portfolio with a new hosted service that features a shared platform using Genesys software. In another announcement, AT&T notified customers that it is discontinuing its CallVantage VoIP service in 2009.

AT&T halts CallVantage VoIP - is this the end of stand-alone consumer VoIP? AT&T recently stopped offering its CallVantage VoIP service to new subscribers. With no official announcement, online shoppers for the service were greeted with a message thanking would-be customers for their interest and noting that the company is not currently accepting new orders for the VoIP service. The decision affects both the consumer and SMB versions of the service. AT&T will continue to provide CallVantage to existing customers, although it has not disclosed what will happen when an existing customer wants to move or change their current service.

Verizon clips VoiceWing, releases wireline VoIP service, femtocell device Today, we've got Verizon on our minds. First, we have news of a wireline VoIP service from Verizon Wireless that includes a device called the Verizon Hub. Second, there is word that Verizon Telecom's VoiceWing VoIP product is being shut down effective March 31. And third, Verizon Wireless introduced a commercial femtocell so users can make mobile calls with the aid of an Internet connection.
