CDN newcomer unveils application suite A newcomer in the content delivery network (CDN) market this week took the wraps off its new network and applications, which are aimed at giving content providers better control over how assets are shared and optimized. Based in San Carlos, Calif., Cotendo was founded in 2008 and is funded by Sequoia Capital and Benchmark Capital. Its R&D operations are based in Israel, where founder and CEO Ronni Zehavi is located. CDNetworks ups its U.S. game Look out Akamai and Limelight Networks: CDNetworks has set its sights on the U.S. market. The content delivery network (CDN) provider got started in 2000 in Seoul, Korea, and initially focused its business in the Asia-Pacific region, establishing offices in China and Japan. Now the company is sharing numbers related to its progress after one full year of operation in the U.S. A 'C change' in CDN? In the world of content distribution networks, A is for Akamai. What about the rest? Is B for BitGravity, or maybe BitTorrent because of the potential impact of peer-to-peer technology on CDNs? Is C for content? I don’t think so. I think it’s for carrier or maybe cloud -- and in either case, the "C change" is potentially a major one for the CDN world. Akamai CEO sees opportunity in economic downturn With many companies cutting headcount and costs to weather the economic downturn, Akamai Technologies President and CEO Paul Sagan wants his sales team to spend more time with customers, part of a bid to make sure that its content delivery and edge-hosting services don't end up on the list of expenses they consider cutting. At the same time, he said the recession will push some companies, particularly those in the retail space, to accelerate their shift to the Internet.
