| Cisco's new11n gear boosts legacy Wi-Fi performance with beamforming Cisco is positioning its Aironet 1140 access point, with its beamforming technology to improve Wi-Fi performance, as the best way to shift to 802.11n without sacrificing legacy 11g and 11a clients. Cisco overcomes 11n AP power, form-factor issues Cisco has tackled the power-consumption and form-factor criticisms of its hefty Aironet 1250 Series Access Point in a new pre-standard 802.11n AP platform, officially announced this week. The new Draft N Aironet 1140 Series Access Point, shipping since last month, functions within the standard 802.3af power over Ethernet (POE) budget while offering a lighter, more aesthetic design for indoor installation. The unit is also slated to gain a proprietary beam-forming capability in April called ClientLink, which Cisco says improves performance of legacy 802.11a/g client devices operating in an 802.11n infrastructure environment. Why Cisco Continues to Lead in WLANs Cisco has been an amazing success in wireless (and, of course, networking overall), dominating the space in much the same way as IBM once did with computers and Microsoft once did with software. Those "once did" phrases are intended to convey an important reality - it's rare for any company to maintain a dominant role in any industry, and also rare, in fact, even to survive as a player over a long period of time. The economy is designed to work that way - newer, more innovative firms with cost structures amenable to the times and circumstances replace big, bloated, inefficient behemoths that were themselves once small and nimble relative to their era.
