Computer History in the Making Do you remember the days of DOS? Are you a command-line junkie? Or, do you remember Peter Norton's best seller, "Inside the IBM PC"? If so, you might be dating yourself, but you will be in a perfect position to watch history in the making when it comes to this crazy world of IT Technology. For those of you who don't have a dog-eared copy of Peter Norton's book, it was one of the first clearly written descriptions of the APIs of a hot, new computer at the time - the IBM PC. It documented the calls available to any developer creating a desktop application. In addition, it documented the calls to Microsoft's DOS at a time when the world was producing thousands of budding developers. It was a must-have in your library if you were in the IT biz at the time. Now, fast forward to the present and open your browser to this webpage listing all the Google APIs. You are seeing history in the making. The APIs of yesteryear promoted by IBM and Microsoft are more and more irrelevant. The Google APIs are where it is all at. Look at the Google APIs carefully and you can see the calls to a personal computer BIOS or operating system like Windows XP or Vista are being replaced by web service offerings. Look a little further and you will see many of the common applications that you have installed on your computer at the present time could be replaced with Google's web-based apps. More importantly, from a user's viewpoint, it is becoming more and more difficult to see the functional differences between the APIs of yesteryear and those of Google. Complete browser screen refreshes are a thing of the past with AJAX and mashups multiply the powers of web-based APIs exponentially. It is a graphic illustration of the future and seeing the complete Google API listing summarized on one single web page has never made this more obvious. It is truly history in the making.
