FROM THE NETWORK CORE TO THE NETWORK EDGE
Traffic management becomes critical as your network
infrastructure expands to support different types of traffic and
users. Most traffic management solutions have serious
limitations: too expensive, difficult to use, and overly taxing
on bandwidth. However ProCurve Networking by HP addresses these
requirements, overcomes the limitations of other solutions, and
gives you valuable insight into LAN performance. Click here to

Today's focus: Riverstone has an access edge
By Jim Duffy
Riverstone Networks this week unveiled two access routers
designed to lower the cost of delivering business and
residential Ethernet services.
The Riverstone 15100 and 15200 Carrier Ethernet Access Routers
extend the feature set of Riverstone's higher-end 15008 Ethernet
edge router to the access point of the network. This is intended
to give service providers the ability to maintain a single
operational model, as well as mix and match VLAN and MPLS access
technologies - including VPLS - to optimize functionality and
cost in both large and small network deployments, Riverstone
says.
Riverstone claims the routers provide edge and core features at
price points closer to access routers. The high cost of edge and
core MPLS/VPLS implementations has, until now, precluded service
providers from deploying the technologies in the access domain,
forcing them to opt for other technologies and compromise on
reliability, scalability, QoS and operational consistency, the
company claims.
The 15100, available in the fourth quarter, features 20G bit/sec
of throughput and supports up to 20 fiber or 10/100/1000M
bit/sec copper downlinks, and four 1G bit/sec uplinks.
The 15200, available in the first quarter of 2006, features 40G
bit/sec of throughput, 24 1G bit/sec service ports, and dual 10G
bit/sec uplinks. Both of the access routers support VPLS,
RFC-2547 MPLS-VPNs, and Layer 3 routing protocols, including
BGP, OSPF, multicast, and IS-IS.
Both routers are fixed-configuration, 2-rack-unit devices.
