As I write this, Hurricane Rita swirls ever closer to Houston and the
historic city of Galveston, Texas. As a Texas native, the state
constitution demands I visit Galveston to learn about the hurricane in
September, 1900, that swept the city clean off the island that only
sits a few feet above sea level. Somewhere between 6,000 and 12,000
people died, and all but a few buildings were completely destroyed.
