Today's focus: Linux server sales grow for 12th straight
quarter

By Phil Hochmuth

Linux server sales continued strong through the second quarter
of 2005, according to a recent market research report.

For the twelfth quarter in a row, Linux server sales saw
double-digit growth, says analyst firm IDC. Server vendors sold
$1.4 billion worth of Linux-based servers in the second quarter
of 2005, a 45% increase from the same quarter a year ago.
Shipments of pre-installed Linux boxes were also up 32% from the
previous quarter, the report says.

The Linux revenue and shipment growth figures outpaced the
overall server market, which grew by 5.6% in revenue and around
10% in terms of shipments. In terms of growth, Linux outpaced
Windows, which saw 14.3% revenue in the second quarter, as well
as all combined Unix revenue, which grew by about 2%. But in
terms of overall sales, Linux was still smaller than Windows and
Unix, however; both operating systems had around $4 billion in
server revenue in the second quarter.

A Linux market milestone was also reached in the second quarter
of 2005, as Linux' total share of the pre-installed server pie
grew to 11.5% of the worldwide server market, which stood at
$12.2 billion in the second quarter. This was the first time
Linux sever sales broke the 10% mark, IDC says.

Among the vendors selling Linux servers, HP was the leader with
24.3% of all Linux server sales, while IBM was second with 20%
of Linux server sales.
