"Sorrow breaks seasons and reposing hours, Makes the night
morning, and the noontide night."
William Shakespeare
Dear Vorticians,
It's difficult to think about the issues that normally consume
our conversations in the wake of the tragedy that has befallen
our neighbors in the south. But while the scope of the disaster
may leave you feeling powerless, you are most certainly not. If
you haven't already contributed to the relief effort, please
click on the following link: http://www.usafreedomcorps.gov and
give to one of the organizations listed. Vorticians are a
generous bunch and I know you'll share your own blessings with
those in the worst of situations.
Now before I get to this week's topics, and speaking of
Vorticians, here's a pop quiz. What do the following Vorticians
have in common? David Bergen of Levi Strauss, Marty Chuck of
Electronic Arts, Don Haile of Fidelity, David Hemendinger of
LifeSpan, Albert Hitchcock of Nortel, Norm Fjeldheim of QualCOMM,
Ed Kamins of Avnet, Dr. Douglas Merrill of Google, David Watson
of Kaiser Permanente, Ryan Granard of DolphinSearch, Sameer Bade
of Medstar.
The answer: They're all CIOs and senior IT executives with some
of the country's most respected corporations, and they're all
speaking at VORTEX 2005 about how they are transforming their IT
operations and their businesses to meet new market realities. If
you're a fellow CIO or someone who wants to win - or keep - these
powerhouses as customers, you'd better be at VORTEX 2005 to hear
from them. You'll learn about their strategies for collaboration,
convergence, security, mobility, virtualization, Web services and
lots more.

speakers, take a trip to http://www.vortex.net. Join the
conversation in October!
This week, here's what I covered in the VORTEX Blog. As always, I
welcome your comments to mailto:jgallant@vortex.net.
Vorticians are skeptical about the Vonage IPO, 08/31/05
Okay, I'm clearly not alone in questioning the value of a Vonage
IPO and the future of the VoIP market itself. After my initial
note raising concerns about the issues Vonage faces, a research
firm published a scathing report on the company and the IPO and
you can read about it here:
http://www.networkworld.com/weblogs/vortex/2005/009866.html. Your
fellow Vorticians also weighed in with their own misgivings about
the company and you can share their insights at
http://www.networkworld.com/weblogs/vortex/2005/009883.html.
Intel and other tech giants put some muscle behind community Wi-
Fi projects, 09/01/05
Everyone loves a good catfight. Well, how about a mountain lion
fight? How about companies like Intel, Cisco, SAP and others
lining up to help cities and towns bypass the Verizons and SBCs
of the world by building their own wireless networks? Read about
the Intel-led Digital Communities effort and enjoy author Andy
Kessler's juicy thoughts about the battle between Philadelphia
and Verizon over Philly's own Wi-Fi network.

That's it for now. Enjoy the holiday weekend.
Bye.
