Today's focus: Swan Labs introduces acceleration appliances
By Denise Dubie
Swan Labs last week unveiled an application delivery platform to
speed files, data and client/server applications over WAN
connections.
The platform uses WANJet software installed on Swan Labs
appliances deployed at both data centers and remote offices. In
data centers, WANJet is deployed on the SL400 appliance, where
it can accelerates aggregate link capacity of up to 622M
bit/sec. In remote offices, WANJet is installed on SL200
appliances and is connected to links of up to 2M bit/sec. The
product can work across multiple WAN connections, such as
dedicated links, IP VPNs, frame relay lines and satellite, the
company says.
Swan Labs claims the product can "deliver LAN-like application
performance over the WAN," which competitors such as Expand
Networks, Packeteer and Peribit also say about their own gear.
Specifically, WANJet accelerates file transfer, e-mail, data
replication and custom applications by reducing data sent over a
WAN and optimizing TCP performance.
Swan Labs uses a network technology dubbed Session Matrix, which
allows WANJet to gather application knowledge at Layer 5 of the
OSI model, the session layer. That helps the product understand
the data it must reduce before delivering it over the WAN, the
company says. Another Swan Labs technology, Transparent Data
Reduction, reduces the amount of data transferred over the WAN
and delivers more bandwidth for applications by expanding WAN
capacity above specified rates, the company says.
WANJet appliances are available today and can support line
speeds from 64K bit/sec to 622M bit/sec. Pricing starts at about
$1,900.
