Today's focus: Survey changes to reflect new realities of VoIP

Over the past three years, one of the more popular papers at the
Webtorials site has been the annual VoIP State-of-the-Market
report. Longtime readers of this newsletter will be familiar
with this series of papers, since we've reported the results
extensively here.

In preparing the report for this year's survey, Steve noticed
that there was a need for a rather drastic overhaul of the
questionnaire, as the marketplace has changed drastically.

Of course, certain "tracking questions" concerning drivers and
inhibitors will be maintained for year-to-year continuity. For
instance, we found it to be extremely significant last year that
the major inhibitor had shifted from economic concerns to
security concerns. However, there also are several issues that
were formerly key questions that we believe have basically
outlived their relevancy and needed to be replaced with a new
set of issues.

For example, even though E-911 continues to be a prime concern,
the E-911 questions were dropped this year to shift to more
application-oriented questions. Similarly, it's a better
assumption now that there has been some degree of deployment -
so the questions have shifted from whether you're deploying VoIP
to how far along you are in your deployment.

In reflecting the changes in the marketplace and, based on our
perception, the issues that seem to be of most concern to end
users - such as questions concerning total cost of ownership -
we've added a number of questions concerning Session Initiation
Protocol and the issues surrounding SIP, plus an expanded
security section.
