NETFLASH: BREAKING NEWS FROM NETWORKWORLD.COM

By Jeff Caruso

We've got a few weeks before the next of Microsoft's Patch
Tuesdays, so it's a good time to step back and see how the
program is working. Does it make life easier or harder for IT
managers? How does it compare to other vendors' approaches to
patching? How could it be better?

Is 'de-perimeterization' a good idea?

Much has been made of the Jericho Forum's
back-to-the-drawing-board approach to security, where the
concept of a network security perimeter is scrapped in favor of
other technologies. In our Face-off, Jamie Bodley-Scott presents
the case for such a security overhaul, while Joel Snyder insists
the effort is misguided.

Zotob worm exploits Windows 2000 Plug and Play

New worms have surfaced that attack a critical vulnerability in
Microsoft 's Windows 2000 Plug and Play service. Over the
weekend, two variants of a new worm, dubbed Zotob, have begun
circulating, though neither variant has become widespread,
researchers say.

McAfee readies home Wi-Fi security tool

All home Wi-Fi gear comes with the bricks and mortar to put up
at least a basic security wall against intruders and
eavesdroppers, but McAfee wants to sell consumers a better
trowel for building it.

Radio: Successful business blogging

With comScore reporting that 50 million Americans read blogs and
that those readers tend to be wealthier and more likely to shop
online, we chat with Matt Moran, author of the "The I.T. Career
Builder's Toolkit," about what makes a good business blog.

Google's bizarre behavior

The folks at Google have apparently lost their minds, says Paul
McNamara. This week he makes the rare move of coming to the
defense of another news organization, one that has been targeted
by Google simply for using the company's search engine and
reporting the results.

Today on Layer 8, which is unfortunately not co-hosting Dick
Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve:

Mom wins son's eBay auction; ICE your cell phone; greedy IT
manager giving IT managers a bad name; and the start of the
latest Weekly Caption Contest; all this today and more at your
home for not-just-networking news.
