NETFLASH: BREAKING NEWS FROM NETWORKWORLD.COM

By Sheryl Hodge

The Information Technology Infrastructure Library is designed to
help cut costs and streamline IT operations, and is finding
converts seeking to maintain regulatory compliance as well.
Initially popular overseas, ITIL is growing in use in the U.S.,
where four out of 10 organizations will adopt it by 2007,
according to Meta Group (now part of Gartner). Former Meta
analyst Michele Hudnall, now director of service management at
software vendor Managed Objects, recently spoke with Network
World Senior Editor Denise Dubie about the realities of ITIL and
how corporate IT shops can make the most of their
implementations.

CA patches critical BrightStor flaw

Computer Associates has released software patches that fix a
critical vulnerability in the company's BrightStor ARCserve
Backup and Enterprise Backup agents. The vulnerability could
allow attackers to take control of a system running the
software. It could also be used as the basis of a
denial-of-service attack, according to CA.

Cisco.com passwords reset after exposure

Cisco is resetting passwords for all registered users of its
Cisco.com Web site after discovering a vulnerability in its
search engine. The passwords are used by Cisco customers,
employees and partners who have registered on the Web site to
get access to special areas of the site or to receive e-mail
alerts, a Cisco spokesman said.

ActiveGrid releases LAMP app server

Pfizer's Global Pharmaceutical Group is now piloting an open
source environment from start-up ActiveGrid that it hopes will
lower costs and improve scalability. The LAMP stack - Linux,
Apache, MySQL, Perl, Python and PHP - is becoming an
increasingly popular environment in which to architect Web-based
applications. In fact, one third of all Web sites are written
using PHP, according to a Netcraft survey conducted late last
year.
