Today's focus: Learn, shop, gawk at LinuxWorld San Francisco

By Phil Hochmuth

The summer edition of LinuxWorld takes place next week at San
Francisco's Moscone Convention Center. Linux pros on the West
Coast, or those heading there should find plenty at the show to
keep them entertained and enlightened.

Show-goers interested in Linux certification will have the
chance to take free Linux certification tests from the Linux
Professional Institute (LPI). On Thursday, Aug. 11 at 1 p.m.,
anyone registered at the show will be able to take the LPI 101
exam for free - a test that usually costs around $100 to take.
LPI 101 is the entry-level LPI certification exam, which tests
for basic Linux administration and configuration knowledge.

Those heading to LinuxWorld can also expect plenty of new
product announcements at the show. Among them will be a new
dual-core 64-bit ADM Opteron blade server from Tatung. The
blade, which runs on Tatung's TUD 4010OP blade server chassis,
can be pre-configured with several flavors of Linux, such as Red
Hat and SuSE. The dual-core design of the modules will allow
users to run Linux servers with the same processing power as
stand-alone boxes, but with less power consumption, which is key
for blade server deployments.

One conference session that stands out in the planning guide is
"Managing Linux in a Mixed Environment ... at Microsoft?" The
session is scheduled to be led by Bill Hilf, Microsoft's
director of platform technology strategy
<http://www.networkworld.com/nllinux4133>. A former Linux guru
for IBM, Hilf now works at a Microsoft lab which researches how
Linux and Windows can interoperate. He'll talk about the unique
position of running a lab of Linux machines in Microsoft's
Redmond, Wash., campus.
