Today's focus: Fujitsu takes on SuSE support at the high end

By Phil Hochmuth

Fujitsu and Novell last week announced a deal where Novell's
SuSE Linux operating system will be offered on Fujitsu's
high-end server platforms. Meanwhile, Fujitsu will also offer
support services for both the SuSE Linux operating system and
the server hardware.

Fujitsu will soon offer SuSE Enterprise Server on its PRIMERGY
and the new PRIMEQUEST line of Intel-based, high-end data center
servers. The PRIMEQUEST server line, unveiled earlier this year,
is targeted at applications that require continuous
availability. The servers use the 64-bit Intel Itanium
architecture, with up to 32 CPUs, 512G bytes of memory and up to
eight hardware-separated server partitions for separating
computing tasks. Fujitsu previously offered Red Hat Linux on the
PRIMEQUEST platform.

Fujitsu is no stranger to SuSE, as the server vendor used the
Linux distribution on its Intel-based servers since 2000, when
SuSE was an independent software company based in Germany. SuSE
was previously only available on Fujitsu PRIMERGY servers in
Europe and Asia. The Novell/Fujitsu agreement now makes SuSE
available worldwide on both Fujitsu high-end Intel boxes.

Although second to Red Hat in popularity, SuSE has strong
support among vendors in the server hardware industry, with IBM,
Dell and HP among the companies offering pre-configured SuSE
boxes. SuSE also appears to be the Linux variant focused on
non-Intel, high-end server deployments; it was the first Linux
to run on IBM's mainframe platform, and is used by mainframe
users to consolidate multiple server boxes into SuSE instances
running on a Big Iron.
