Today's focus: Ask GOD and receive a text message with answers
to your questions

By Keith Shaw

Summer's here - let's have some fun. Here are some fun items
that crossed the news desk recently:

HEAVEN HELP US: "Until now, the handheld mobile Internet hype
promised heaven but had users cursing like hell while squinting
at small screens and typing on dot-sized buttons" read the pitch
from Ask GOD (Go Online Data). The company plans to launch its
"Phoneternet" service in July 2005.

The offering is a concierge-like service that lets users dial a
toll-free number and be assigned an Internet search expert (or
"Angel") who will answer any question the user has. The expert
will also be able to make online purchases and reservations.
Users can wait for an answer while on the phone, or they can
have the answer sent back via text message or e-mail. Users can
also send queries to Ask GOD via text message and have the
answers texted back. Monthly subscriptions are offered for the
service, head to <http://www.askgod.com/> for more details.

ON-DEMAND TRAFFIC: On a recent trip to L.A., we were amazed at
the traffic volume (as well as the number of vehicle fires) on
the freeways. Now travelers can get some help through their cell
phone. Southern California radio station KFWB, The Mobile Media
Company, Westwood One and 3United Mobile Solutions have launched
an on-demand service that offers customized traffic text
messages on users' cell phones. The service can be accessed by
sending a chosen route number via text message to telephone
number 98011. The status of the highway is then sent back to the
user's phone via text message, at 75 cents per message. No word
yet on whether accidents caused by users trying to send a text
message while on the freeway are the actual cause of the
backups.

CLANG CLANG CLANG GOES MY CELL PHONE: A seriously underserved
market in the ring tone world now has some help from Sprint. The
company recently launched Music Tones that feature actual song
clips from the most popular shows on Broadway. PCS Vision
customers can download ringers from shows like "Wicked",
"Chicago", "The Producers", "Hairspray" and others. Customers
can buy and download the ringers directly from their phone or go
through the Sprint Web site ( <http://www.sprintpcs.com/> ). The
ringers cost $2.50 each (a bit high for a ringer, in my
opinion). More details are available at
<http://www.sprint.com/broadway>
