By Joanie Wexler Motorola stirred up a potential hornet's nest in the Wi-Fi community last week when it filed a lawsuit against Aruba Networks for infringement of several wireless LAN patents. Will other WLAN vendors selling centralized systems be targeted next, potentially changing the dynamics and pricing structure of the entire Wi-Fi industry? Motorola received patents in February of this year for the so-called WLAN switch technology that its recent acquisition, Symbol Technologies, introduced in 2002. Symbol’s Mobius switch was the first WLAN system on the market to move network intelligence out of distributed radio access points and into a centralized hub for more scalable provisioning and management. A series of startup companies followed with similar centralized designs: Aruba, Airespace (now merged with Cisco), Trapeze Networks, and Meru Networks, to name a few. Motorola is suing Aruba for infringement of U.S. Patent No. 7,173,922, “Multiple Wireless Local Area Networks Occupying Overlapping Physical Spaces,” and Patent No. 7,173,923, “Security in Multiple Wireless Local Area Networks.” The company is also suing for infringement on two patents awarded in 2003 to a 2005 Motorola acquisition, Wireless Valley, for site survey/RF planning tools. Aaron Bernstein, VP and deputy general counsel, intellectual property, for Symbol/Motorola, said Motorola’s intent is to protect its shareholders. But rather than seeking licensing fees and royalties, its aim is to “exclude the further use of our patent innovation,” he said. “It doesn’t match up that this is good for shareholders if you don’t want royalties,” said Iain Gillot, president of iGR Research, a mobile and wireless research firm in Austin, Texas. “It’s a little odd to…have a patent and only exercise it yourself. There’s more to be gained by getting some money out of it.” Bernstein did say that Motorola might be entitled to monetary damages, even for use prior to the patent being awarded because pending patent applications are made public. It’s difficult to speculate what lies beneath. Bernstein wouldn’t comment on whether it intends to file suits against other companies with similar designs. Aruba spokesperson Michael Tennefoss said at press time that his company hadn’t yet been served with papers so he couldn't comment.   What do you think? Post a comment on this newsletter

Pricey application performance problems

Network World's Network/Systems Management Newsletter, 09/03/07 Pricey application performance problems By Denise Dubie Any network manager worth his or her mettle knows that when application performance degrades he or she is going to hear about it -- especially if a majority of companies report performance problems cost them more than $1 million per year. That's why network managers have been working hard to get a handle on application performance on the LAN as well as the WAN. But despite the efforts -- and countless pitches from vendors hailing the ideal technology -- a majority of companies experience application performance degradations. At least, that is according to a recent survey of 100 senior IT decision makers at U.K. enterprise companies conducted by independent research company Vanson Bourne and commissioned by network optimization vendor Ipanema Technologies. And the majority of those polled said additional bandwidth does little to improve performance. Of the 100 organizations of 1,000 or more employees polled, one in 10 reported that poor application performance can cost them about $4 million or more annually. The financial services sector, in particular, saw 40% of respondents reporting annual losses of $2 million or more from application performance problems. The major performance issues reported included "slow running applications, downtime, packet loss and jitter." And 44% of those polled said such performance problems typically stemmed from network problems -- yet 75% of all surveyed said bandwidth upgrades rarely solved the application performance issues they were experiencing. Still 57% of those surveyed said they still resort to adding bandwidth to address application performance problems. Because of the inconsistency of application performance only 58% of survey respondents said they are able to offer their end users "application-centric" service-level agreements, an Ipanema press release stated. Part of the problem is that IT managers are unable to manage network and application traffic in real time, the survey found, in particular for 81% of those polled in retail, distribution and transport industries. With companies considering a move to SOA and virtualization, more factors must come into play when looking at application performance. Companies such as Akorri look at application dependency on storage and other resources to ensure peak performance, and industry watchers argue application intelligence will be incorporated into network equipment to deal with performance going forward.   What do you think? Network World's Convergence & VoIP Newsletter, 09/03/07 IBM gives presence a boost By Steve Taylor and Larry Hettick Following last week’s look at VoiceCon Fall 2007 highlights, today we’d like to dig a little deeper into the three IBM announcements. During the show, IBM launched the next phase of its unified communication and collaboration (UC2) strategy by expanding its IBM Lotus Sametime software with new telephony integration software; it announced a deal with Siemens to license elements of Siemens’ OpenScape technology; and it announced plans to acquire WebDialogs. By partnering with Siemens, IBM will improve the presence capabilities of its products, adding add click-to-call, click to conference, rules-based call control, and multi-vendor PBX support. In short, IBM will improve its SIP-based IP telephony that allows it to better compete with and/or more integrate with other suppliers’ infrastructure. The agreement is a natural evolution for both companies that share similar perspectives on both software-as-a-service (SaaS) and on open standards-based multivendor environments. IBM’s plans aren’t expected to have a negative effect on the existing partnerships IBM has with Nortel, Siemens, or others. The second set of announced enhancements include upgrades for collaboration and integration offering features like IM, contact list management features, persistent group chat, screen sharing, and on-premise Web conferencing along with a wider integration with Microsoft Office and Outlook and support of video capabilities for Macintosh clients.
