Electrical Information

I am the owner of ES Group, LLC, publisher of Electrical Solutions magazine.

Being a small business owner, I know finding ways to promote your business
for a small investment is very hard to come by these days. This is the
reason Electrical Solutions magazine has become such an important part of many companies
marketing plans. Instead of spending thousands of dollars advertising in
other Electrical related magazines and websites, Electrical Solutions offers
companies the opportunity to reach buyers for so much less. Where else can
you reach your target audience for less then $1076 for a full page, full color ad and also receive
complimentary online coverage?

Because of Electrical Solutions' dedication to their customers success we have
decided to invest in an additional resource to help get your message into
the hands of more potential buyers, and best of all, we our offering this at
no additional charge.

Electrical Solutions is offering a Digital version of our publication, which
means along with our normal mailed distribution, our advertisers will also
be included in the digital edition that will be emailed out to an additional
30,000 potential buyers.

As an advertiser in our digital issue, your advertisement will not only be
linked straight to your website, it will also have a link directly to your
email so your customers can get a hold of you with just one click. On top of
that, digital editions are immediate so your customers will receive your marketing
message much faster than the mailed edition.

I truly feel, that the addition of digital distribution to our already
popular mailed distribution along with our advertising rates that are much
lower than all other publications, this is a can't miss opportunity for your
company.

If you have any questions or would like more information on how you can
utilize this service, please contact me directly at 515-574-2234 or email me
at steve@industrymarketingsolutions.com

I look forward to working with you.

This is Network World's Microsoft Subnet news alert in which we focus on the top items from Microsoft Subnet, your daily source for Microsoft news, blogs, discussion items, security alerts, giveaways and more.

Top pick of the week

The value of a computer science degree
The IT world and the business world sometimes jive and sometimes clash. The latest clash is over the best way to prepare IT professionals. Is a degree in computer science the ideal way to do that? Or is it better to have IT pros with business degrees who learn IT skills through on-the-job training and certifications. This was the subject of a Network World special report with three Microsoft Subnet bloggers weighing in. Microsoft Subnet blogger Tyson Kopczynski writes about When a computer science degree matters, and when it doesn't; Microsoft Subnet blogger Brian Egler writes that a computer science degree: helpful but not necessary.

IBM Steps On American Workers - Future IT Managers Replace IBM
That great sucking sound isn't NAFDA, it's IBM (and their empty headed executives) thumbing their nose at 5k of IBM's productive, loyal North American workers, while IBM sucks their jobs right from under them and the American economy. Layoffs are layoffs, most companies have been forced to take some type of action, either out of necessity or by riding the curve and trimming during the recession. Even Microsoft was forced to make a 5k layoff move, but at least Microsoft was hiring another 2-3k positions at the same time. But IBM's move says much more about IBM's declining commitment to the American market and its workers.

Brian Egler: SQL Server Strategies
Business Intelligence load balancing? Have your check book ready…
As I outlined in a previous blog entry, Microsoft has produced a huge 16GB VPC Image that has the entire Business Intelligence development stack installed on a single virtual machine. While this works, it is clearly not a good idea to load all this software onto a single server. But how should you scale out this solution in production? Well, it depends…

Ron Barrett: A Better Windows World
MailArchiva: Open Source Email Archiving for Exchange
I thought I would finish the week talking about more email tools. I found a cool open source solution for email archiving call MailArchiva. MailArchiva is a great solution to help you to deal with email archiving in your organization as well as helping you to make sure you are in compliance if this is important to your organization.

Tyson Kopczynski: Hidden Microsoft
When a computer science degree matters, and when it doesn't
A very good question is posed in this article: Top 10 technology skills Why yes... it all depends. How about that for an answer? Given, I could have also answered the question with another question. For example, "What necessity are you referring to?" or "What would the person be doing?" and so on. I guess the point that I'm trying to drive home with my non-answers.

Kerrie Meyler: Managing Microsoft
Job hunting: What kind of college degree do you need?
As IT professionals, sooner or later we decide to look for another job (hopefully voluntarily). And even if you're not looking for a job at the moment, it's always a good idea to have your resume current ... you'll never know when you'll need it.

Glenn Weadock: Windows Server 2008
Of Quotas and Epoxy
I have a shower door handle that doesn’t want to stay connected to the shower door. I’ve tried two different kinds of epoxy, and if you look at the handle, you can see remnants of both kinds. I probably should have been diligent enough to remove all traces of the first glue before applying the second, but I didn’t think it would matter. It did.

Randy Muller: All About Microsoft Certifications
Should an IT Pro have a college degree?
So, do IT personnel need a college degree? That is the subject of an article in Network World: Does a Computer Science degree matter anymore? I don't think there is a definitive yes or no answer for this question. I believe that in some areas of the IT field, yes, a degree is required or at the very least should be strongly encouraged. A programmer, for instance, should have a prescribed course of instruction. Do Network Administrators require the same level of formal instruction as a programmer, or for that matter, does a Database Administrator? The Database Administrator probably should have some formal education. As to the Network Administrator, this is one IT position that probably does not require a college degree for normal day-to-day operations.

A hidden chore of deploying NAC One of the great hidden chores of deploying NAC is finding all the devices that are attached to the network, even those that can't authenticate.

NAC remediation options When NAC was conceived, it had everything to do with finding out if endpoints met security checks, but not so much about what to do about it.

NAC as a compliance tool NAC is mainly pushed as a risk-mitigation technology that can reduce the likelihood that an endpoint is infected or carrying out unauthorized activity, but its features have been pressed into other duties.

Business size and NAC needs As NAC matures, it is becoming clear that the needs of smaller businesses and those of enterprises call for different solutions.

NAC-as-a-service The recent purchase of Mirage Networks by service provider Trustwave raises questions about whether NAC-as-a-service is a viable business.

Ensuring that SLAs are worthwhile

Steve Taylor By Steve Taylor and Jim Metzler
There is a lot of buzz in the industry right now indicating that IT organizations should offer internal service-level agreements. In most cases, this buzz skips right over most, if not all of the challenges associated with that task. This newsletter is the next installment in a series of newsletters that is focusing on how IT organizations can successfully offer internal SLAs. Read full story

Steve Taylor is president of Distributed Networking Associates and publisher/editor-in-chief of Webtorials. Jim Metzler is vice president of Ashton, Metzler & Associates.

The need to focus Last week in Denver, Network World hosted an event entitled 'IT Roadmap conference.' At that conference Jim moderated two tracks - one track was on Network Management and the other was on Application Delivery. The overall conference was very interactive with a lot of dialogue amongst end users, industry analysts, and vendors. That dialogue highlighted the fact that in 2009 IT organizations need to focus even more than they do in normal economic times. With that in mind, this newsletter and the next two newsletters will discuss the need for IT organizations to focus on a handful of key applications.

Establishing SLAs for key applications The last newsletter highlighted the fact that the dialogue at Network World’s recent IT Roadmap conference in Denver emphasized that the challenging economic environment puts pressure on IT organizations to focus even more than they do in normal economic times. With that in mind, this newsletter will begin to outline a process that IT organizations should follow in order to focus on a handful of key applications.

Are SLAs worthwhile? The last newsletter discussed the fact that the conventional wisdom in our industry is that IT organizations need to offer service-level agreements internally within their company. That newsletter also pointed out that in many cases the SLAs IT organizations get from their WAN service providers are not that impactful and raised the question of what should IT organizations do differently to ensure that their internal SLAs are impactful. This newsletter will provide a part of the answer to that question./p>

Are we cyborgs yet? The cyborg, or cybernetic organism -- part human, part machine -- is a staple of science fiction, from Star Trek to The Six Million Dollar Man to RoboCop to the Terminator. Twitter Tips: How To Search Twitter Smarter
It's easy to miss little gems of information on Twitter, the social networking service that allows users to exchange short messages. As the list of people you follow on Twitter grows, the problem becomes more acute: hundreds of messages pass by and flow off the page before you've even had a chance to look at them.

Green Phosphor makes virtual world valuable

Mark Gibbs By Mark Gibbs
Online virtual worlds have been around for a long time and interest in them is enormous - in a report titled "Market Forecasts for Virtual World Experiences" published in June, 2008, Strategy Analytics predicted that 22% of global broadband users would register for one or more virtual worlds, resulting in a market of 1 billion users worth about $8 billion (note that these figures are hard to verify due to a lot of confusion in the market about the number of registrants, frequent users, and numbers of avatars). Mark Gibbs is a consultant, author, journalist and columnist.

Aardvark solves my Gmail problem

Becoming green or just greenish?
Becoming an environmentally responsible organization isn't easy particularly in IT. It requires seeing the bigger picture and treating effort of becoming green as a comprehensive, strategic issue. So far, not many organizations are doing anything like that.

Keeping IT honest
Just over a week ago Forrester Research posted a blog item titled "Sponsored Conversations: When it's OK to pay bloggers to post."

Generating regexes and Gmail filters
Mark Gibbs is very impressed with a service that generates code for regular expressions and he has found that Gmail now supports importing and exporting filters. His happiness knows no bounds.

Search tools: hardware, an add-on and a service
Gibbs outlines a product awaiting test that searches and captures television programs, raves about a browser search enhancement plug-in he can’t live without, and is quite impressed by a service to help you identify errors.

To Tweet or not to Tweet, that's not an option
I'm writing this column for one simple reason: Once I get it written then the next time someone says to me "I don't get Twitter, it seems kinda stoopid to me. What is it all about?" I can direct them to this polemic and save my breath.

Computers and five kinds of insanity
I wrote last week about New Zealand's insane copyright legislation that would make people accused of content piracy guilty until proven innocent. Over the last few days I've been marveling at how that seems to be consistent with the general level of insanity that surrounds the digital world at present.

Wrapping up TiddlyWiki
The excitement is coming to an end...Mark Gibbs has covered TiddlyWiki up one side and down the other and is still amazed with the application.

New Zealand gets insane copyright law
A law has just been passed in New Zealand that allows for alleged online copyright infringers to have their Internet access cut off before being proved guilty.

TiddlyWiki macros and plugins
Continuing with his exploration of TiddlyWiki wiki technology, Mark Gibbs looks at the system's macros and plugins that modify and extend the how and what the software can do.

IT's glass - full, empty or too big?
In times of economic chaos and budget cuts you need to check your perspective. You know the old saw: A pessimist sees the glass as half empty; the optimist sees it as half full. These are both wrong ways of looking at the problem. The realist's perspective, the right way, recognizes that when there's space above the contents the glass is simply too big.

Exploring TiddlyWiki
Mark Gibbs discusses some reader feedback on TiddlyWiki and then starts to break down the TiddlyWiki system. Will the excitement never end?

Fixing the privacy joke
The whole idea of privacy has become a joke. On one hand we have consumers who will give away their personal details to random Web sites (as well as to Mrs. Sikiratu Seki Adam, "a widow to Late Saheed Baba Adams") at the drop of a virtual hat, and on the other we have businesses losing personally identifiable information and transaction data with wild abandon … yes, I'm talking about you Heartland Payment Systems. (Heartland lost data on more than 100 million transactions although it is hardly alone — check out the data loss database at the Open Security Foundation).
