Podcast: SOX at 5: Benefits and Headaches, 08/29/07: The Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002 turned five on July 31. Many are wondering whether all the work is worth it. James Sayles, chief compliance advisor at Ecora Software and an expert in security, risk management and auditing, discusses the pros and cons of SOX with Cara Garretson.

The Blogosphere rages over OOXML standards vote: As the deadline approaches for the ISO vote on acceptance/rejection of Open Office XML as a standard, anyone and everyone involved in the process is blogging about it. ISPs to rural U.S.: Live with dial-up; MPLS proposal spawns IETF, ITU turf war

Network World

WAN News Alert

WAN News Alert, 08/31/07

ISPs to rural U.S.: Live with dial-up, 08/27/07: You can't get there from here. That old New England saw is an apt metaphor for the state of high-speed rural broadband. While many telecommunications carriers are posting record profits this year, millions of U.S. homes and businesses still have no access to broadband -- and that's no coincidence.

MPLS proposal spawns IETF, ITU turf war, 08/30/07: The IETF and ITU standards bodies are sparring over a set of MPLS specifications that some say could lead to massive interoperability issues for service providers if left unchanged.

Notes from OPNETWORK 2007: Cisco Subnet blogger Jeff Doyle writes: "OPNET has a new IPv6 planning and analysis module for their network modeling platform, and invited me to their OPNETWORK technology conference to get some hands-on time with it."

Current EarthLink deal with SF looks dead, 08/29/07: EarthLink's current contract to build a municipal Wi-Fi network in San Francisco appears to be dead following a restructuring of the struggling ISP.

Former Juniper lawyer faces backdating charge, 08/29/07: Juniper Networks has been caught up in the stock options backdating scandal as a former general counsel for the network equipment company is charged with violating the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission accounting rules.

Indian software outsourcers focus on reuse, 08/29/07: Up against competition for markets and for hiring staff, Indian software outsourcers are focusing on building reusable software that automates specific business processes. These software components can in turn be used across a number of clients, saving costs and time.

The schism between the applications team and the rest of IT, 08/28/07: The last newsletter mentioned the forthcoming IT Roadmap conference that Network World is producing at the Adams's Mark hotel in Dallas on Sept. 6. That newsletter also discussed some of the topics that we’ve talked about in recent newsletter and that Jim will cover in his two keynotes at the ITR conference.

Cisco News Alert

Network World's Cisco News Alert, 08/31/07

Welcome to the Friday edition of Network World's Cisco News Alert in which we focus on the top items from Cisco Subnet, your gateway to Cisco news, blogs, discussion forums, security alerts, giveaways and more. Enjoy!

* TOP PICK OF THE WEEK:

Cisco's efforts to eradicate unauthorized sales stops shy of working with UNEDA
Cisco hopes to eliminate unauthorized sales of its gear on eBay by signing up for the auctioneer's Verified Rights Owner Program (VeRO). Curiously though, Cisco has remained silent on whether it would work with the United Network Equipment Dealer Association to eradicate counterfeit equipment in the wider market. Why is Cisco seemingly hesitant to take up UNEDA's offer to work together in this effort? Let us know.

* FROM OUR BLOGGERS:

Brad Reese on Cisco: CCAI - Cisco cert teaching future Cisco pros
Received a Cisco Resume this week from of all places Kathmandu, Nepal. Obviously, it was quite a thrill to receive a resume from that mythical, exotic paradise Bob Seger made famous in his hit song Katmandu ...

Jeff Doyle on IP Routing: Protecting your network edge: Now for the bad news
Over a number of previous posts I’ve written about securing the edge of your network, protecting both you and your external peering neighbors from malicious attack and from damaging configuration errors; I’ve written about everything from basic best practices to bogon filtering to source filtering to spiffy tools like uRPF and TTL hacks. It seems like there’s always a “But…”, so here’s the big But in the room: Many of the tools and configurations I’ve discussed can involve a performance tradeoff, and some can introduce security vulnerabilities.

Author Expert Jamey Heary: Highlighting 5 NEW lesser known PIX/ASA Firewall features
The 8.0.2 software release for the PIX and ASA platforms was a big one! My guess is you haven’t had the time, or the inspiration, to read through the release notes and drill into the configuration guide to find all of the new features you now get with the 8.0.2 code release. Fret not, I am here to help!

ChannelSurfing with Ken Presti: The Cisco-Microsoft lovefest: Tough choices ahead for the channel?
Collaboration and friendly co-opetition were clearly the main themes of the August 20th moderated discussion between John Chambers and Microsoft’s Steve Balmer. And if there are two guys in the modern business world with more reasons to get all brotherly, I don’t know who they might be. People with the most success are also the ones with most to lose. So I actually think there was more happening than basic PR. This was as much of a message to people within Cisco and Microsoft as it was a message to people outside of both companies. Play nice.

Michael Morris' Notes from the Field: Do you understand how much bandwidth 1Gbps is?
That's the question I often find myself asking users. At our largest sites we have deployed Gigabit to the desktop - not because users need it, but because the price difference between 10/100/1000 and 10/100 cards in Cisco 6500s is small. Plus, there are better features in the 10/100/1000 blades than in the older 10/100 cards. So, might as well get the Gig blades.

HOT DISCUSSIONS AMONG CISCO SUBNET READERS:

Unlocking Linksys IP devices: Can it be done?
Linksys IP devices may be unlockable, reports the Voice over IP blog. The blog is responding to VoIP provider Nuvio's July open letter to Cisco, asking its Linksys division to unlock its devices to help rescue customers of the defunct SunRocket VoIP provider. Cisco Subnet readers think it is possible and have the scars to prove it.

ProCurve is breathing down Cisco's neck
ProCurve Networking is closing in on Cisco in the Ethernet switch market, according to Infonetics Research. Is the gap getting smaller because customers are disatisfied with Cisco or because ProCurve is a better alternative?

FREEBIES, GIVEAWAYS AND OTHER NOTABLES:

* Enter to Win one of 15 copies of Jamey Heary's book "Cisco NAC Appliance: Enforcing Host Security with Clean Access." Details here (competition closes at the end of today!) Get a sneak peek of a chapter here.

* Read a free chapter of "Cisco IP Telephony (CIPT) (Authorized Self-Study), 2nd Edition" by Jeremy D. Cioara. Free excerpt: Chapter 11: Cisco Unified CallManager Advanced Route Plans.

KEITH SHAW: IT BETTER START WORRYING ABOUT THE NEXT IPHONE

Better late than never, I finally received my iPhone evaluation unit from Apple (whoo!). After fighting off several co-workers, our summer intern and my 20-month daughter (don't ask) for control of the device, I was able to explore some of the device's features first hand.

My initial thought? IT is going to have some serious problems down the road.

For a lot of enterprise IT managers, it was easy to "just say no" for enterprise deployment of an iPhone - they could point to a general corporate policy (if they had one) about not supporting first-generation devices or equipment. Hey, even Microsoft has to generally wait until it rolls out a service pack or two before most companies start to take the offering seriously (good news for Vista fans - SP1 is set to arrive somewhere between January and March 2008).

Even if the iPhone-ravenous employee was able to get by the first "no" from IT, there is still difficult Exchange e-mail interaction, the slower AT&T EDGE wireless network and other issues that make the first iPhone not as enterprise friendly as most companies would like.

New chips from Intel support Cisco's flavor of NAC

Network World

Security: Network Access Control

Network World's Security: Network Access Control Newsletter, 08/30/07

New chips from Intel support Cisco’s flavor of NAC

By Tim Greene

New chips from Intel support Cisco’s NAC. The vPro microprocessors can store certificates for 802.1x authentication, which can be a component of Cisco’s NAC, as well as storing information needed by Cisco’s NAC to determine whether a device complies with security policies.

Specifically, Cisco NAC seeks to know things such as whether a device has an updated operating system or updated virus libraries. It uses this information to determine whether the device is safe enough to let onto the network, with a reasonable degree of assurance that the machine is not infected.

This checking is generally done either with no specialized software on the end machine - which allows rudimentary endpoint checking - or via software or dissolvable software agents.

The problem with software doing the checks is that the machines are essentially reporting on themselves, a well-known weakness in security architecture. If the end machine is compromised, it might be compromised to the extent that it can lie effectively to the NAC policy engine.

The generally accepted better method is to have the endpoint check done in hardware, which is what the new chips support. Cisco NAC posture can be stored in the chips themselves.

This makes endpoint checks available even if the hardware is powered down or if the operating system is compromised. The chips also can receive updates for software on the host computers, so the chips could become part of remedying shortcomings that a NAC check reveals.

These new features are something that should be kept in mind as businesses update their computers and if they are weighing whether Cisco NAC is the way to go.

Just how wireless can we get?

Network Architecture

Network World's Network Architecture Newsletter, 08/30/07

Just how wireless can we get?

By Jeff Caruso

With wireless LANs advancing rapidly, people keep raising the question, could we live without wires in our networks?

We have a whole other newsletter directed at wireless issues, but it is getting increasingly difficult to think of wireless as something outside of the rest of network architecture. Wireless is everywhere, it seems. Wireless is getting faster, with the advent of IEEE 802.11n (still in draft state, admittedly, but that's not stopping products from appearing). Wireless is becoming part of the network infrastructure of our nation's cities (although Chicago just took a step in the other direction).

I just did a search and found that I first touched on the issue of leaving wired networks behind four years ago. Back then the security issues had not been resolved, and that remained a sticking point. Interference and the limited bandwidth that WLANs provided were also cited as problematic.

Get Up to Speed on the Latest in WLANs

Easily stay on top of the latest developments and issues in WLAN technology, standards, security, telephony, management and more with Network World's latest Executive Guide, "Keeping Up With the Wireless Whirlwind."

Today, it seems, the security issues are still a challenge - and so are the interference issues, in a way. Joanie Wexler recently wrote in the Wireless in the Enterprise newsletter that, in the midst of speculation that some networks could go "all-wireless," we also have to consider the possibility of wireless-specific attacks - namely, jamming. As she points out, jamming your WLAN signal is essentially a denial-of-service attack, and it's certainly possible to do.

The real reason people are asking whether we can go all-wireless, or at least mostly wireless, is the new speeds we are starting to see with 802.11n. But is that enough?

Are you ready to abandon copper?

Network World

Wide Area Networking

Network World's Wide Area Networking Newsletter, 08/30/07

Are you ready to abandon copper?

By Steve Taylor and Jim Metzler

It was recently reported in the popular press that in some cases, service providers are removing copper wiring capabilities when homes convert to fiber optic services. In this particular case, the situation involved a person ordering Verizon’s FiOS fiber optic service. In this residential setting, the copper is being retired, and, according to an Associated Press article, future residents of the home may not have the option of going back to copper wiring.

According to the article: “Under the Telecommunications Act of 1996, incumbent phone companies like Verizon must lease to rivals their copper network. That's generally not the case for next-generation fiber systems. And so far, Verizon has filed more than 100 notices with the FCC to retire portions of copper throughout its network.

“The FCC allows the retirement of copper as long as public notice is given so the phone companies can work together to ensure the smaller companies' access. But rivals say access at reasonable prices is not guaranteed and it's just a matter of time before they're cut off.”

Having the FTTH (Fiber to the Home) access enables any local service provider to provide triple-play services. At the same time, it also provides a more reliable network overall, thereby lowering overall network costs.

Again, quoting from the AP article, Verizon says that: “the company will restore copper to homes if the customer insists, but Verizon would rather not reconnect the copper and will try to persuade the customer to agree. At any rate, the phone giant provides ample warning.”

For now, this is primarily a consumer issue but we do see significant implications for businesses in several aspects. First, there’s the issue of supporting mobile workers and attempting to have a unified strategy for all employees. Also, for branch offices, we foresee a day when office complexes may no longer have copper-based telephony access as a viable option.

In the next newsletter, we’ll examine some of the alternatives to copper-based services.

Network World's Network Optimization Newsletter, 08/30/07

Adding to the lineup

By Ann Bednarz

Expand Networks this week announced four new products in its portfolio of application acceleration wares. The Accelerator 4830 and 4930 are targeted for small offices and branch offices, and the Accelerator 6830 and 6930 are designed for larger regional offices.

A key feature of the devices is more flexible support for wide-area file services (WAFS), which is aimed at companies that want to cut back on the numbers of servers deployed at branch offices and consolidate them in the data center.

Other newly added features include self-adjusting TCP acceleration and dynamic bandwidth management capabilities. For customers, these features translate into an increase in the number of concurrent optimized TCP sessions supported -- which sit at 64,000 for the 4830 and 4930 devices and up to 128,000 for the 6830 and 6930 devices, according to Expand Networks CTO Efi Gatmor.

New Executive Guide

Network World has recently published an executive guide entitled "Virtualization Meets Reality". Find out the 8 key challenges of virtualizing your data center.

Download it now!

Suited for smaller remote locations, the Accelerator 4830 and 4930 devices offer compression, QoS, protocol optimization, security and encryption features, and they can accelerate IP-based applications including Oracle, SAP, Exchange and Citrix. For companies that are loathe to store data on hard drives for security reasons, the 4830 and 6830 devices do not come with hard drives, Expand Networks says.

The Accelerator 6830 and 6930 offer the same functionality, scaled for larger regional offices.

“We did a lot of market research and polled our customers on their key priorities,” said Gatmor. “The answers that kept coming back were that they required a multipoint solution that has the ability to handle many concurrent TCP sessions and could optimize almost any application and protocol. All four of our new products, which run on the Compass 6.1 Platform, address these requirements.”

In addition, the 6830 and the 6930 include flow-optimized TCP acceleration control, which uses Vegas-style algorithms to monitor the real-time state of each flow of data, according to Expand. The algorithms are designed to tune the acceleration functions to the optimal rate without overloading the infrastructure so that performance is consistent. This results in more predictable flows, fewer re-transmissions and a more efficient use of the infrastructure, Expand says.

Another feature is dynamic bandwidth adjustment, which lets a device scale the bandwidth it sends to the WAN when congestion occurs in the cloud.

Lastly, transparent WAFS capabilities eliminate the need for re-mapping clients in a virtual environment. In a virtual server architecture, Expand’s Compass software platform assumes the name of the branch file server (so that clients effectively map to Compass) and WAFS optimization takes place. With transparent WAFS, clients already mapped to the central enterprise file server also can be optimized by Compass in the branch office without remapping.

Aptare expands into capacity management

By Deni Connor

Aptare last week introduced a new version of its StorageConsole software, which contains for the first time a capacity management component.

StorageConsole Platform 6.5 now includes the ability to track storage capacity utilization to let storage administrators determine future storage needs.

StorageConsole 6.5 integrates backup reporting and storage capacity management into a single Web-based console.

Best practices for WAN Optimization

Join Mark Fabbi, Gartner Vice President and Distinguished Analyst, as he discusses the four critical actions you must take to meet your application acceleration goals. Also, learn how to choose the best WAN optimization solution for your needs, how to building a scalable architecture and more.

The new StorageConsole Capacity Management application gives storage administrators insight into the variance between allocated and used storage and provides predictive analysis to make future forecasting easier and more reliable. IT can view the relationship of host computers to arrays and identify storage users and abusers. With the software they can also identify underutilized storage. The StorageConsole Capacity Management application also provides alerts and notification of irregular storage utilization and consumption-based charge back reporting.

Additionally, the StorageConsole Backup Management module has been enhanced with support for HP Data Protector and Symantec Backup Exec 11D backup environments.

Going forward, StorageConsole will support reporting on replication of data.

Aptare was founded in 1993 and claims as many as 300 customers.

The Capacity Management Application is priced at $20,000 for 50TB of storage under management. The Backup Management module costs $15,000 for 50 backup clients.

The new version is expected to be available by the end of this month.

Connectivity and its impact on Web 2.0 and unified communications

Network World's Unified Communications Newsletter, 08/30/07

Connectivity and its impact on Web 2.0 and unified communications

By Michael Osterman

Dion Hinchcliffe’s Web 2.0 Blog has an older but good list of issues that are facing Web 2.0 today. Among the problems that Dion sees for Web 2.0 is ‘Needing a Permaconnection,’ or the need for always-on connectivity in order for Web 2.0 to work.

I’d like to extend that concern not only to Web 2.0, but also to unified communications systems in which e-mail, IP telephony, fax, Web conferencing and other services are integrated and managed more holistically than conventional communication systems. While there are enormous advantages associated with this integration, the vulnerability of this approach goes up, as well. For example, while there is virtually universal connectivity in the workplace, there are times when networks go down, sometimes for days at a time. In the Seattle area last December, a major storm knocked out power and broadband services for hundreds of thousands of people. Some businesses and residences in a heavily populated area just a few miles from Microsoft’s main campus were without these services for nearly two weeks. The result is that when a network fails, e-mail, voice and other services are simultaneously unavailable.

Even when things are operating normally, there are times during which connectivity is unavailable, particularly for mobile employees, making the productivity gains associated with unified communications and Web 2.0 more vulnerable to disruption.

It's taking the world be storm. And now it's coming to NY/LA/Chicago at an exclusive Network World LIVE IT Spotlight Event

Carrier Ethernet for Business: The Birth of the New Global Network. Making the world your '"local area." Linking far-flung offices and remote customer sites. Connecting applications seamlessly and reliably across nations, borders, and continents. It's the future of global networking and you can be one of the first to know about it by attending a once-in a generation event conducted by the Metro Ethernet Forum [MEF], the world's leading authority on carrier-class ethernet. Reserve a complimentary seat: Reserve a complimentary seat

Will this vulnerability slow the adoption of unified communications and Web 2.0 technologies? I believe that it will be of increasing concern to IT managers and others who are charged with not only reducing the cost of the infrastructure, but also with improving its reliability.

Forrester: SIM market set to flourish

By Denise Dubie

Security information management (SIM) products began to emerge earlier this decade as an alternative to manually dealing with the volume of security alerts generated across various network and security devices.

Sometimes called security event management, SIM products started to pop up from start-ups and some existing management and security vendors. A flurry of start-ups emerged -- such as netForensics, GuardedNet, e-Security and Intellitactics to name just a few -- with technology designed to marry the data collection, normalization and correlation capabilities of management software with the intelligence of security tools.

SIM technology is designed to automate the collection of event log data from security devices and help users make sense of it through a common management console. SIM products use data aggregation and event correlation features similar to those of network-management software and applies them to event logs generated from security devices such as firewalls, proxy servers, intrusion-detection systems and antivirus software. What's more, SIM products can normalize data -- that is, they can translate Cisco and Check Point Software alerts, for example, into a common format so the data can be correlated.

New Executive Guide

Network World has recently published an executive guide entitled "Virtualization Meets Reality". Find out the 8 key challenges of virtualizing your data center.

Download it now!

Bigger vendors picked up on the potential of this technology and started shopping. For instance, Novell acquired e-Security; Micromuse acquired GuardedNet; and IBM later acquired Micromuse. And those vendors were on to something even a few years ago.

According to Forrester Research, the market for SIM technology is growing at a rate of about 50% and will continue to grow like that until 2009 -- reaching close to $1.2 billion by 2011. Due to pressures around meeting regulatory standards, more companies need to perform log management and demonstrate the integrity of their business processes -- "which means they are monitoring applications and the underlying infrastructure for improper behavior," a recent Forrester report states.

Another factor that will drive the growth, Forrester says, is small to midsize businesses taking a look at SIM. As the products become easier to use and more affordable, SMBs will start to invest in the technology. Right now, Forrester estimates, companies with fewer than 1,000 employees account for about 1% of the market, but by 2011 they could make up about 30%. And SIM technology could become a bridge between IT and business operations, the research firm speculates, saying it will foster more collaboration as it flourishes in companies of all sizes.

"SIM will be the primary tool for enabling operations teams and security teams to collaborate on: turning business policy into specific configurations and requirements; assessing the risk of ongoing security issues; and coordinating the response to security incidents," the report reads.

Debian stays true to its roots - Bdale Garbee for LinuxWorld, 08/27/07: It's a busy time for the members of the Debian Project. Sam Hocevar took over as the new Debian Project leader in April, right around the time the long-awaited Debian 4.0 or 'Etch,' hit the streets. And, in mid-June, hundreds of active Debian developers, contributors and other software visionaries from around the world met, many for the first time, in Edinburgh, Scotland, at the Debian Project's annual developer conference.

The Debian Project was started in August 1993 by Ian Murdock, and early on he drafted a Debian Manifesto that explained what he hoped to accomplish. The idea of an all-volunteer Linux distribution project quickly attracted a small, passionate group of free software hackers that has evolved into a very large, well-organized community of developers and users. I joined the project about a year after it started, and have remained active ever since. What continues to motivate me to remain involved is that Debian is one of the most impressive examples of distributed software development in the world—and is entirely based on the collaborative work of volunteers.

As it grew, the Debian Project crafted a constitution to designate how key decisions would be made. Unlike many other organizations, only tiny bits of power are given to designated people working on the project, like the elected Debian Project Leader, Secretary and Technical Committee. Most rights remain with individual developers, and thus power within Debian is distributed over the entire developer base. There's a voting mechanism for resolving issues that can't be agreed upon simply among individuals. The social contract, constitution and policy documents provide context, and a measure of stability, to empower Debian community members to remain focused on the work at hand.

The Debian distribution is a fascinating social phenomenon. Imagine a voluntary group of more than 1,000 registered developers who build and distribute software that is equal or superior to any commercial operating system -- and there’s no company backing them. (read more)

Microsoft has a ways to go with VoIP but competitors should beware

By Steve Taylor

As we disclosed last time in our VoiceCon 2007 highlights, Microsoft has announced the addition of voice “quality of experience” monitoring to its unified communications and VoIP feature set. The timing of Microsoft’s announcement was somewhat ironic since it came in the same week that Cisco’s CEO John Chambers and Microsoft’s CEO Steve Ballmer held a major press event that discussed how the two companies’ relationship is formed around both cooperation and competition.

Microsoft’s announcement clearly reinforces the notion that it is a formidable competitor to Cisco and to other IP telephony equipment suppliers when it comes to VoIP and unified communications. Microsoft’s Office Communications Server (OCS) 2007 Quality of Experience Monitoring (QOEM) Server is designed to monitor voice and video quality and issues, and it features real-time updates, along with alerts and detailed analysis of network performance based on the user’s endpoint.

According to Gurdeep Singh Pall, corporate vice president at Microsoft’s Unified Communications: “A new era of business communication is upon us, defined by software, not hardware — and sound quality will be one of the key product differentiators.”

Get more out of your IT dollar

Business Services Management lets you get more out of your IT investments by aligning business goals and your core infrastructure. Network World Editor-in-Chief John Dix and IDC Research Manager Stephen Elliot examine BSM's benefits and how enterprises are starting to take advantage of this strategy.

Attend now!

Backing up Gurdeep’s claim, Microsoft has released a white paper that touts its superiority over other solutions.

Since the software will only provide QoS monitoring and management to Microsoft-specific deployments, the initial release will be somewhat helpful to enterprises that deploy OCS with their PBX, but IT managers will still need to rely on other management tools for elements that aren’t connected to OCS 2007.

Our analysis: While the addition of voice and video quality management adds another arrow in the Microsoft quiver, we don’t think Microsoft has a complete VoIP solution – at least not yet. But as we’ve said before, traditional suppliers like Nortel, Siemens, Avaya and Cisco need to keep ahead of the feature curve if they don’t want to be entirely displaced by Microsoft.

And on the issue of cooperation vs. competition, we’ll come back to that again next week.

Efforts afoot to ease building complex Wi-Fi environments

By Joanie Wexler

As enterprises connect more systems to their wireless LANs to support additional applications, an increasingly complex integration job faces them – or, at least, their integrators.

To help ease these configuration challenges, WLAN system maker Extricom this week announced the formation of a group of ecosystem vendors that will work together to smooth out the software configuration discrepancies between their systems. The company’s Uni-Fi Alliance involves, so far, location tag maker Aeroscout, wireless VoIP handset maker Ascom and wireless intrusion detection and prevention supplier AirTight.

The group differs from the Wi-Fi Alliance, which tests and certifies basic 802.11 system component interoperability among vendors. The Wi-Fi-Certified stamp of approval indicates that one vendor’s client can successfully transmit signals to another vendor’s access point. At the application layer, however, there is a dearth of industry-standard APIs for how WLANs should talk to upstream devices such as location appliances and IP PBXs, and downstream devices such as VoIP client handsets.

Easily stay on top of the latest developments and issues in WLAN technology, standards, security, telephony, management and more with Network World's latest Executive Guide, "Keeping Up With the Wireless Whirlwind."

As a result, integrators or enterprises need to fiddle with the various software configuration discrepancies themselves to get the disparate systems to interoperate, says Norm Dubroff, CEO at WAV, an Extricom distributor in Aurora, Ill.

The goal of the alliance, intended to expand to include IP PBX makers, fixed-mobile convergence gateway suppliers, and others, is to do some upfront legwork to reduce the necessary fiddling. The joint work will create implementation notes to help installers with the many configuration parameters and variables that must be adjusted for different types of systems to work together, says David Confalonieri, Extricom’s VP of marketing.

Extricom is a start-up whose WLAN system is built on a so-called channel-blanket architecture, rather than a cell-based architecture. The blanket architecture - conceptually similar to Meru Networks’s single-channel architecture but allowing multiple channels to be overlaid on top of one another - makes all access points look like one big AP to Wi-Fi traffic. The architecture promotes seamless mobility with no AP-to-AP handoffs (particularly meaningful to latency-sensitive VoIP), the elimination of RF cell planning and co-channel interference, and the ability to offer a performance guarantee for both connection rate and bandwidth.

Is it really possible to unlock Linksys IP phones?; Skype woos SMBs

Network World

Convergence & VoIP News Alert

Network World's Convergence & VoIP News Alert, 08/29/07

Is it really possible to unlock Linksys IP phones?: Bloggers and Cisco Subnet readers debate whether it is possible to unlock Linksys IP phones.

Unlocking the iPhone could invite DMCA suit, 08/27/07: Hackers who unlock Apple's iPhone from the AT&T network and share the method with 10 million of their closest Internet friends are inviting a lawsuit from the two companies, several intellectual property lawyers said Monday.

Managing voice, 08/28/07: At Voicecon last week, there was much hoopla around IP telephony management, led by EMC’s announcement to play in the space following a partnership deal inked with Integrated Research. Finally… IT decision-makers are paying at least some attention to how they will manage their voice (and ultimately unified) communication infrastructure.

Unified communications behind increased network traffic, 08/27/07: When it comes to network traffic, network managers know it's not about how to decrease traffic; it's more about how to ensure bottlenecks are avoided when traffic inevitably continues to grow.

Defunct SunRocket sues Vonage over subscriber list, 08/24/07: Defunct VoIP service provider SunRocket is suing Vonage, claiming its rival used its subscriber list without paying for it.

Skype woos SMBs with new deal, 08/24/07: Skype has launched a package for small businesses that bundles up the company's software with call credits and subscriptions for multiple users.

Cisco vs. Microsoft: More FUD ahead: Cisco Subnet's Channelguy says despite the promises of Cisco CEO John Chambers and Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer to play nice it's likely that their sales reps will still sling FUD.

Microsoft, Limelight deal revealed: Microsoft has hired Limelight Networks to boost Internet performance. The two have hinted that they will jointly develop broadcast quality video streaming technologies.
